The Musical Instrument Museum celebrates the similarities and differences of the world’s cultures as expressed through music, which is common to us all. With musical instruments from every country, MIM pays homage to the history and diversity of instruments and introduces museum visitors to their varied and unique sounds.

MIM is a 200,000-square-foot museum located in Phoenix, AZ. Under the leadership of founding board chairman and Target Corporation’s former chairman Robert Ulrich, MIM curators traveled the world to gather indigenous and popular musical instruments from 200 countries and territories, building a collection of over 15,000 instruments.

With nearly 5,000 instruments and objects from around the world on display, MIM features advanced wireless technology and high-resolution video screens, enabling guests to see instruments, hear their sounds, and observe them being played in their original settings.

MIM’s galleries provide a rich experience for the museum guests. Exhibition galleries are organized according to five broad geographical regions – from the mountains of South America to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, from the African savannah to the mountains of Appalachia. In the hands-on Experience Gallery, guests can play instruments from the collection. Traveling exhibitions displayed in the Target Gallery feature collections from collaborating museums.

MIM is also home to the 300-seat, state-of-the-art Music Theater – a premier venue for performances and films.
